Choosing the Right Coolant for UAE Heat

How to choose engine coolant and antifreeze that protects against overheating in the UAE's extreme temperatures. A practical guide from XB Brothers General Trading LLC.

In the UAE, the cooling system is one of the hardest-working parts of any vehicle. Ambient temperatures above 45°C for months, combined with stop-start city traffic, push engines toward the top of their thermal range every single day. The coolant you choose — and how you maintain it — is the difference between an engine that copes and one that overheats.

What coolant actually does

Coolant (antifreeze) is far more than “the green liquid in the radiator.” A good coolant does three jobs at once:

  • Raises the boiling point so the system can run hot without boiling over.
  • Protects against corrosion inside the radiator, water pump, engine block and heater core.
  • Transfers heat efficiently away from the engine to the radiator.

In a hot climate it’s the boil-over protection and corrosion inhibitors that matter most. Plain water boils at 100°C and offers no protection at all; a correctly mixed coolant pushes the boiling point well above that and keeps the metal surfaces inside the engine clean.

OAT, IAT and hybrid coolants — what’s the difference?

Coolants are grouped by their corrosion-inhibitor chemistry, and mixing the wrong types can cause gelling or reduced protection:

  • IAT (Inorganic Additive Technology) — traditional coolant, often blue or green. Effective but shorter-lived; needs changing more frequently.
  • OAT (Organic Acid Technology) — long-life coolant, frequently orange, red or pink. Lasts far longer and is common in modern vehicles.
  • HOAT (Hybrid OAT) — a blend that combines fast-acting and long-life inhibitors.

The golden rule: use the coolant specification your vehicle manufacturer requires, and don’t mix incompatible types. If you’re unsure what’s already in the system, flush it and start fresh with the correct specification.

Mixing ratios for high ambient temperatures

Coolant is supplied either ready-mixed or as a concentrate that must be diluted with clean (ideally deionised) water:

  • 50/50 coolant to water suits most vehicles and gives strong protection.
  • In sustained extreme heat, a slightly higher concentrate ratio raises the boiling point further — but never exceed the manufacturer’s maximum. Too much concentrate actually transfers heat less efficiently.
  • Never run plain water long-term: it offers no corrosion protection and boils too easily.

Flush before you fill

Over time, scale, rust and oily residues build up in the cooling system and reduce its ability to shed heat — a major contributor to overheating in UAE conditions. Before a coolant change, clean the system with a radiator flush so the new coolant works in a clean circuit. Wynn’s Radiator Flush is available on Amazon.ae for exactly this.

A simple cooling-system routine for the UAE

  • Check coolant level and condition regularly, especially before summer.
  • Flush and refill at the manufacturer’s interval, or sooner if the coolant looks cloudy or discoloured.
  • Inspect hoses, the radiator cap and the water pump for leaks and wear.
  • Keep the radiator fins clean of dust and debris.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just top up my coolant with water in the UAE?

Only in an emergency, and only briefly. Plain water boils sooner, offers no corrosion protection and leaves scale behind. Return to a correct coolant/water mix as soon as possible — in UAE heat a properly formulated coolant is what keeps the system from boiling over.

What coolant mixing ratio should I use in the UAE?

A 50/50 coolant-to-water mix suits most vehicles and gives strong boil-over protection. In sustained extreme heat some workshops run a slightly higher concentrate ratio (up to about 60/40) for a higher boiling point — but never exceed the manufacturer's stated maximum, as too much concentrate actually reduces heat transfer.

How often should engine coolant be changed?

Follow the vehicle manufacturer's schedule, but treat UAE heat as a reason to check condition more often. Long-life (OAT) coolants commonly last several years or 150,000+ km, while older conventional coolants need changing more frequently. Cloudy, discoloured or contaminated coolant should be flushed and replaced regardless of age.
