Engine Oil Grades Explained: 5W-30, 5W-40 & 10W-40 in UAE Heat

What engine oil grades like 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10W-40 actually mean, and how to choose the right one for UAE heat. A practical guide from XB Brothers General Trading LLC.

Walk into any parts shop in the UAE and you’ll face a wall of oil bottles labelled with codes like 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10W-40. The codes aren’t marketing — they describe exactly how the oil behaves cold and hot, which matters more here than almost anywhere. This guide explains what the grades mean and how to choose correctly for the heat.

Reading the grade: what the numbers mean

Modern engine oils are multigrade, written as two numbers split by a “W”:

  • The number before the W (e.g. the 5 in 5W-30) is the cold-flow rating. W stands for winter. Lower numbers flow more easily when the engine is cold, so oil reaches moving parts faster at startup.
  • The number after the W (e.g. the 30) is the viscosity at full operating temperature. Higher numbers stay thicker when hot.

So 5W-40 flows like a thin 5-grade oil on a cold start, then behaves like a thicker 40-grade once the engine is hot. In the UAE, the second number — hot viscosity — is the one to pay attention to, because engines here spend their lives at the top of their thermal range.

Why grade matters more in UAE heat

Heat thins oil. An oil that holds a protective film at 30°C may struggle at the sustained high temperatures and stop-start traffic typical of a UAE summer. If the film thins too far, metal contacts metal and wear accelerates.

That’s why two things matter most locally:

  1. A stable hot viscosity — the oil must keep its rated film strength when the engine is hot.
  2. Resistance to breakdown — the oil shouldn’t degrade or oxidise quickly under heat.

Both point toward quality fully synthetic oils, which hold viscosity and resist heat far better than mineral oils.

Synthetic vs mineral

  • Fully synthetic — engineered base oils that resist heat, maintain stable viscosity and protect well during hot starts. The best choice for most vehicles in the UAE.
  • Semi-synthetic — a blend offering a middle ground on cost and performance.
  • Mineral — refined from crude; cheaper, suited to older engines and lighter use, but less heat-stable.

In this climate, the extra cost of synthetic usually pays back in protection and longer oil life.

The golden rule: follow the specification

Whatever you read about grades, the manufacturer’s specification wins. Your handbook lists the required viscosity grade and the industry specifications (API, ACEA, and any manufacturer approvals) the oil must meet. Using an oil that doesn’t meet the spec — even a “premium” one — can void warranties and harm the engine. Match the grade and the spec; only deviate on professional advice.

It’s also worth pairing the right oil with the right additives — see Engine Oil & Additives Explained for how treatments complement a good oil.

Choosing oil for a fleet

For fleets and workshops, consistency matters as much as grade: standardising on the correct synthetic grades, buying in bulk, and keeping service intervals tight (UAE heat is hard on oil) controls both reliability and cost. See How Often Should You Change Your Engine Oil in the UAE? for interval guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What does 5W-30 mean on an oil bottle?

The number before the W is the oil's cold-flow rating (W = winter) — lower means it flows better when cold at startup. The number after is the viscosity at full operating temperature — higher means it stays thicker when hot. So 5W-30 flows easily on a cold start and holds a 30 viscosity grade when hot.

Which engine oil is best for UAE heat?

Use the grade and specification your vehicle manufacturer specifies — that's non-negotiable. Within that, the UAE's heat is a strong reason to use a quality fully synthetic oil, which holds its protective film better at high temperatures than mineral oil. Many UAE drivers run grades such as 5W-40 or 10W-40, but always follow the handbook.

Is 5W-40 better than 5W-30 in the UAE?

Neither is universally "better" — they suit different engines. 5W-40 stays slightly thicker at operating temperature, which some engines and older or harder-working vehicles benefit from in the heat, while many modern engines are designed for thinner 5W-30 for efficiency. Use what your manufacturer specifies; only deviate on professional advice.

Should I use synthetic or mineral oil in the UAE?

For most vehicles in UAE conditions, a fully synthetic oil is the better choice. Synthetics resist breaking down at high temperatures, maintain a more stable viscosity and protect better during hot starts and stop-start traffic. Semi-synthetic and mineral oils still have their place on a budget or for older engines, but synthetic earns its cost in the heat.
